Diego Armando Maradona lived two lives. The first was that of the soccer player. Maradona was a genius, superb controller of the ball, and an idol for the Argentines and the whole world. His other life was that of the unstructured Maradona, a man who made questionable and even downright bad decisions, this being the side that fans would rather forget. Regardless, tributes to him still continue to highlight the impact of the “Pelusa.” “Diego did not die, Diego did not die, Diego lives in town,” is frequently repeated by his fans.
Son of Dalma Salvadora Franco and Diego Maradona, the 1986 Argentinian world champion in Mexico was born on October 30, 1960. He was the fifth of eight children and the first boy. He grew up in Villa Fiorito, one of the most unprotected and abandoned areas in the province of Buenos Aires, and had many struggles while growing up.
In 1969, he joined “Los Cebollitas”, an Argentinian youth soccer team. As a child, he caught the attention of many for his unique technique and style of play. His debut on the First Division was on October 20, 1976, ten days after turning 16. He entered with jersey number 16.
Maradona with Messi / “He leaves us, but he does not truly leave, because Diego is eternal. I am left with the beautiful moments I spent with him,” wrote Leo Messi, who worked with Maradona in 2010.
In 2006, Maradona recalled a memory in his first book, “Yo soy el Diego,” in which he describes his coach telling him, “Wow, Diego, play like you mean it.” Maradona continues, “I took his word. I received the ball with my back to my marker, and I kicked the ball through his legs. I immediately took the ‘Ooooole’ of the people, as a welcome,” explained Maradona about his first goal in the First Division.
Entering the Argentinian National Team
While with the Argentinian National Team, he won the 1979 Japan U20 World Cup. Then, in Mexico in 1986, he earned his famous name by scoring the best goal of the 20th century known as the goal with “La mano de Dios” against England in the quarterfinals in which Argentina won. Maradona went through Boca Juniors. In his international career, he played with Barcelona, Naples, and Sevilla.
He won a Metropolitano (1981) with Boca Juniors, the Copa del Rey (1983), the League Cup (1983) and the Spanish Super Cup (1983) with Barcelona and the Italian team (1987 and 1990), an Italian Cup (1987) and a UEFA Cup (1989) with Naples. He recently directed the Dorados de Sinaloa (2018-2019), of the Second Division of Mexico.

The Controversial Diego
In 2008, he took over as Argentinian coach and resigned two years later after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. His statements, fights, and legal disputes put him many times in the eye of the storm.
Maradona criminally denounced his ex-wife and went years without recognizing several of his children. This star soccer player was filmed while beating his ex-partner Rocío Oliva and was also accused of sexual abuse by a Russian journalist.
Maradona ruthlessly criticized the Catholic Church, FIFA, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and dozens of coaches, players, and public figures. Additionally, he had a strong political and partisan commitment to communism, which made him loved and hated.
He received multiple accolades, hosted his own television show, and came near death multiple times. The return to his native country in 2019 as a gymnastics coach showed that despite the years spent elsewhere, his love for Argentina never disappeared.
In early November, he was hospitalized for subdural hematoma. The death of Maradona, one of the best-known men on the planet, marks an end point in his personal history. However, his myth and memory will remain valid forever.

Death Investigation
Remembering the Star / Tattoo shops in Argentina receive daily requests from clients to mark the player’s name or the number 10 that he used.
There is a debate about whether “el ten” was properly attended to in the last days of his life. Mario Baudry, lawyer for Maradona’s youngest son, Diego Fernando (born in 2013 from his relationship with Verónica Ojeda), considered Maradona’s death “avoidable.”
“We are going to request that all those who participated in Diego’s care be investigated to the fullest extent in the event that there was neglect in caring for him in his last moments,” said attorney Baudry.
This lawyer’s complaints have been unsuccessful thus far however. An Argentine judge ruled out the extension of an arrest warrant and imprisonment for the neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, who treated Maradona. They will continue the investigation requested by Baudry but with Lupe released.
